About Atrij

Atrij is an independent journal about living well in Istria: houses and the people who design them, interiors and craft, and the land, food and wine around them.

The name comes from the atrium, the open heart of the Roman house, which Istria has known since Pula was a Roman colony. It is the room around which everything else is arranged, which is how we think about a home.

Istria has thousands of well-built villas and houses, an estimated seven thousand villas alone, and many of them deserve better interiors than they have. Atrij exists to raise that standard: to show what good furnishing looks like here, and that it is not only for the rich.

What we write about

Stone houses and new villas, the architects who design them and the light they are designed around. Interiors that suit the climate and the way people live here. Furniture made to measure, and the difference between plywood and particleboard. And the slower pleasures that bring people to Istria in the first place: olive oil, truffles, Malvazija and Teran, hill towns and the sea.

Disclosure

Atrij collaborates with one furniture maker, the Lampisa atelier in Istria, and recommends no other furniture brand. Atrij does not make, buy or sell furniture itself.

Languages

Atrij is written in English and published in several languages. Translations are reviewed by native speakers before they are published.
